GOLDEN STONES

0407

HEADQUARTERS OF THE INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS

SALAMANCA, HISTORICAL CITY CENTRE

CASTILLA Y LEON, SPAIN

COMPETITION, 2004

The building consists of a solid stone cruciform core within which people circulate. Around the core are the areas of work and the information desks. All of this is wrapped by a light weight façade.

Light, the main character of the project, is treated in different ways:

 - Filtered light: Light is softened and controlled in the zones for offices, and it generates an homogeneus atmosphere. A semi-permeable light effect is created by the way the facade is treated.

 - Direct light: Sun light enters the circulation areas directly with no barrier.

The stone walls of the cruciform reflect and extend the light, creating awareness of the passing of time and seasons.

People moving along the building will enjoy the framed views: the cathedral, the convent of Santo Domingo, the medieval palaces.

A certain duality of old fabric and new technology is best expressed through the selection of materials:

 - Local golden sandstone, in the walls of the central cruciform core;

 - Combination of glass and bronze, in the facades;

 - Stainless steel and glass, in the work areas.

The central core is made of structural walls, and the external façades are supported by pillars.
